Two turkey vultures pick at a roadkilled deer in late October west of Harrisonburg. Harrisonburg High School students are conducting a study in their Governor’s STEM Academy biotechnology class to look at how lead is spread through organs and muscle tissue in deer killed during hunting season, both in terms of the safety of humans consuming the meat and for potential lead toxicity issues of birds and animals scavenging on the carcass.
