Illustration – “Exuberance in a trapped space.”

By Matthew Marinello, Contributor

Shit happens. Life still goes on, and life is still precious – it just feels different sometimes.

Right now is one of those ‘sometimes.’ Social distancing has become the new normal, and with it, we find ourselves holding each other at a distance commonly reserved for the deceased. Six feet apart does not feel too tall an order, but the artist has too often found themselves encroaching on this limit when swept up in activity, especially when in good cheer and company. A lid is suddenly placed on a moment. In the artist’s view, this lid or cap – the check to inter-personal exchange – creates a subtle tension or suspense. The three illustrations are reflections on this suspension. Exuberance in a trapped space.
