City schools implement restorative approaches to move beyond detention and discipline

With student behavior remaining a key factor in teacher morale, Harrisonburg city schools’ Restorative Practice Coordinator Isaiah Dottin-Carter said Tuesday he’s trying to use restorative approaches to address conflicts while ensuring that all voices are heard.

Many Rockingham Co. parents and school staff have opinions and almost all have questions about book policies

“A joke,” one person called them. “Politically motivated disaster,” opined another. A “confusing, unnecessary overreach,” said one more — a sentiment that was repeated, just with different wording, in other responses. These were a few people’s opinions on the Rockingham County School Board’s proposed policies to determine selection and challenge criteria for library books, according to survey responses obtained by The Citizen through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Earlier elementary school hours and later middle school times among suggested changes; Rocktown High’s staff list starts coming together

It might only be the third week of 2024, but Harrisonburg City Public Schools faculty and staff are already looking ahead to the fall – and changes are on the horizon.The district is already looking ahead and moving teachers and staff to the new Rocktown High School, which is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year. And changes don’t stop at staffing — the School Start Times Task Force has proposed new start and end times for every school in the district by suggesting early start times for younger students and later starts for middle schoolers.

School board allows teachers to move forward with collective bargaining vote

Andrew Thompson, president of the Harrisonburg Education Association, called the Harrisonburg City School Board’s Tuesday business meeting a “historic night” after board members voted 5-1 to allow the district’s teachers and other employees to move forward with an election to decide whether to engage in collective bargaining. 

Rocktown High School has its first principal

City school leaders hired Tamara Mines as Rocktown High School’s first principal, and Superintendent Michael Richards and the school board welcomed her at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The first draft of the next year’s city school budget calls for a 7.47% increase, mostly to cover effects of inflation and other rising costs, as well as to prepare for the opening of Rocktown High School in fall 2024.
