Group of teachers’ complaint against Harrisonburg schools can proceed, judge rules

In a setback for the Harrisonburg School Board, a judge on Tuesday denied its request to throw out the legal complaint several teachers are pursuing in connection with the district’s policies regarding transgender students. The judge also imposed a 28-day deadline for the school district to provide documents the teachers’ attorneys have requested.

A judge on Tuesday heard from attorneys on both sides of a lawsuit that a half-dozen teachers and parents brought against the Harrisonburg City Public Schools in connection to the district’s policies regarding transgender students.

As the Harrisonburg City School Board and a group of parents and teachers prepare to go to court over interpretations of teacher training materials given last year, Superintendent Michael Richards filed a sworn statement that counters some of what one of the teachers has been saying to media.
