After 6 years of prep, Javier Calleja seeks to bridge divides in his run for council

Javier Calleja’s first job was to go door-to-door selling dish soap to pay his electricity bill when he was 8. More than 30 years later, he’s knocking on doors again for another reason: to spread the word about his campaign as an independent candidate for Harrisonburg City Council.

Harrisonburg Democrats are preparing for their second caucus of the summer next weekend to select their nominee to fill out the last two years of a city council seat’s term.

Harrisonburg Democrats will vote in a caucus on July 16 to determine whether council member Chris Jones or local activist Paloma Saucedo will be the party’s nominee for a city council seat. 

Hirschmann resigns from Harrisonburg City Council

UPDATED: Harrisonburg City Councilman George Hirschmann, the lone independent on the council, announced Thursday that because of health concerns, he has resigned from city council effective immediately. 

Reed says she’s ‘still in this race’ after missing filing deadline; Democrats file extension request

Mayor Deanna Reed, the top vote getter in the last month’s Harrisonburg City Council Democratic primary, said she still plans to run for re-election and for her name to be on the Nov. 3 election ballot even though her election paperwork wasn’t submitted by Virginia’s June 9 deadline. And the state Democratic Party has stepped in to ask the state for a filing extension in the wake of other election-related postponements this spring.
