Lights, skate park, action: City expects some ARPA-funded upgrades to be finished as early as summer

Harrisonburg residents can expect as soon as this summer to see several improvements funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, including renovations and upgrades to several parks and recreation facilities.

Council gives final approval — and a defense — of its spending plan

The Harrisonburg City Council on Tuesday put a bow on its plan for spending more than $20 million in federal funds, while Vice Mayor Sal Romero wrapped up the last meeting of his four-year tenure.

City looks to add 15 new firefighters for new station. And there’s a plan to cover those salaries for 3 years.

The Harrisonburg Fire Department will move ahead with plans to add 15 new firefighters over the next year so they can begin training staff for the new fire station near EMU’s campus that is slated to open in January 2024. But the city might not have to cover their salaries until 2026.

Council moves ahead on new fire station and allowing a gas station downtown

Vehicle fueling will return to downtown after the city council on Tuesday approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow gas stations in the central business district.
