City looks to add 15 new firefighters for new station. And there’s a plan to cover those salaries for 3 years.

The Harrisonburg Fire Department will move ahead with plans to add 15 new firefighters over the next year so they can begin training staff for the new fire station near EMU’s campus that is slated to open in January 2024. But the city might not have to cover their salaries until 2026.

Planting time in Port Republic

Over about 20 years, Chris Anderson has planted thousands of trees. Last Friday, she added a few more to that total on a farm near Port Republic. “Oh, I’ve got a beautiful farm with a lot of different slope aspects,” she says. “And gorgeous soil, incredible soil, really deep, rich loamy soil with a lot of earthworms.”

Tree planting marks 150th anniversary of Newtown Cemetery

On Saturday, a tree-planting ceremony marked the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Newtown Cemetery. Nearly 1,000 people are buried at the property, purchased in 1869 by a group of trustees wanting to establish a cemetery open to “all persons of color.”
