Efficient buildings and encouraging electric vehicles on city’s next environmental to-do list

With the city’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory now in hand, members of the Environmental Performance Standards Advisory Committee are itching to connect community resources to start enacting the Environmental Action Plan’s next phases. Coordinating efforts to weatherize Harrisonburg homes and buildings, install more electric car charging stations and replace combustion engine school buses with cleaner versions are all on the to-do list.

Michael Alexiou said he would love to see combustion engines become relics of the past.A driver of an electric vehicle since 2014, the Harrisonburg resident is not among those drivers who have had to wait in line for gas this week in the midst of the Colonial Pipeline crisis. But even as energy firms and governments push for electric vehicles, expansion of infrastructure — like charging stations — is slow — including in Harrisonburg.

For many people, climate change is the biggest existential threat humans face. While many of the biggest advocates for action are the young, closer to home one equally impassioned person doing all he can is Cal Redekop, age 94. Being in his tenth decade hasn’t stopped him from curbing his carbon footprint to help preserve the environment.
