Schools’ dual language program is in high demand and ripe for expansion, board members say
Harrisonburg City Public Schools’ original class of “dual language” students — the ones who started as kindergarteners in 2010 — began high school this fall. And now the school board and staff are looking toward expanding the program that is attracting more applicants than available spots each year.

The deal is off between the Harrisonburg City Public Schools and solar company Secure Futures, LLC, to build the largest solar array for a Virginia public school system. The school system’s leaders and the solar company couldn’t agree on the terms and ultimately broke off negotiations last month, according to documents The Citizen received through a request under the Virginia Public Records Act.

An educator for 34 years, Cynthia Prieto has been at the helm of Harrisonburg High School for the last five years. During that time the school has grown to 1,860 students from about 1,460, causing classes to spill out into auxiliary trailers and some teachers to pack their supplies into mobile carts in lieu of their own classroom.
School board chooses Nielsen Builders to construct new high school
Harrisonburg is one step closer to building the second high school, as the school board voted unanimously on Tuesday night to seek city council’s approval to develop an interim agreement with Nielsen Builders, Inc.
