Almost six months since construction on Harrisonburg’s second high school was suspended, the project remains in limbo, with no timeline yet established to resume work. COVID-19, though, has prompted competing takeaways about the wisdom of moving forward.

Board delays new high school project

Harrisonburg’s new high school will not open by fall 2022 as planned. In light of local revenue lost because of the pandemic, the Harrisonburg School Board voted unanimously in a virtual meeting Tuesday to suspend the project until the city attains the necessary funding.

The timeline for building the new high school remains uncertain after the Harrisonburg School Board met in a special meeting on Thursday.

The city school board will collect community input to help guide the design for the new high school — as well as how it will be set up and operated in conjunction with Harrisonburg High School — including through a public meeting Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Harrison Middle School auditorium.

Harrisonburg is one step closer to building the second high school, as the school board voted unanimously on Tuesday night to seek city council’s approval to develop an interim agreement with Nielsen Builders, Inc.
