Group calls for accessibility upgrades to school playgrounds and communications

A group advocating for improvements to the city’s special education programs asked the school board for continued training and support for school personnel, physical accessibility upgrades to classrooms and playgrounds, and making school communications more accessible for those with disabilities.

Adagio House seeks to provide respite and support for caregivers

April Hepler has known that she wanted to be a psychotherapist since she was in middle school and had imagined creating a retreat center since she was in college. Then, when her son was born with disabilities, her professional and personal experiences intersected and led her to found the nonprofit organization Adagio House in September 2019.

Programs partner to offer first fall season of Challenger baseball in Harrisonburg

As the bat hits the ball, the parents all cheer. The batter, a young girl in a motorized wheelchair, zooms toward first base. This isn’t just little league — it’s an inclusive version in which children with disabilities participate and is now expanding to the fall season. 

For programs aimed at helping people with disabilities, funding remains a challenge

A pair of organizations continue to help people with disabilities be more involved in the community, including training them for jobs or providing them with volunteer opportunities. But those agencies find themselves constantly grinding away with fundraising and grant requests to pay for those programs.
