Harrisonburg’s population goes down but households in poverty ticks up

Although Harrisonburg’s total population decreased by 278 people from 2023 to 2024, the number of households in poverty increased by 356, or 2% of the city’s population.

More than half of the children in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County live in households that struggle to make ends meet even though family members are employed, according to the local United Way’s analysis of economic data.

$326K to go toward property to help homeless; Meanwhile Hburg residents at poverty level increase

The Harrisonburg City Council on Tuesday approved spending remaining federal CARES Act funds to buy property to help address homelessness in the community — a step some city leaders said they hope will lead to a year-round shelter. And housing insecurity was a theme at Tuesday’s meeting as council members learned more about the increasing numbers of residents teetering on the brink of or already in poverty.  

Partnership offers a path to homeownership and sustainable energy

Charly Ngeleka spent his Friday afternoon on a scaffold, lifting solar panels up to the installation team on the roof. He and another half-dozen volunteers were working on a partially-finished duplex in Harrisonburg, one being built by the Central Valley Habitat for Humanity. When completed, it’ll become Ngeleka’s home.
