County school board’s Matt Cross gets slapped with campaign fines, lands second chance for GOP endorsement

While July is usually quieter for election candidates, Rockingham County School Board member Matt Cross — who’s running for re-election this fall — has had month by landing a second chance at landing a key endorsement and having to pay a state fine for a not filing his campaign fundraising reports on time.

Big Money: Fundraising in local General Assembly races reaches six figures

The most recent campaign finance reports filed with the Virginia Department of Elections show that local candidates have raised nearly $1.5 million in their quests for a seat in the General Assembly in this November’s election. This year, all four House of Delegates districts and both state Senate districts that cover Rockingham County and Harrisonburg are contested, and the races are generating record sums of cash.

Democratic 26th District candidates both try small-donor approach — but reveal different campaign spending philosophies as they try to chase Del. Wilt.

By emphasizing small, individual donations and not seeking corporate money from power companies such as Dominion Energy, the two Democrats running for the party’s nomination in the 26th House of Delegates seat this fall are following larger trends within the party.
