An overcast sky and a few sprinkles Saturday didn’t dampen the spirits of volunteers and others who swiftly snapped 357 solar panels into place on the roof of Eastern Mennonite School.
Unable to occupy the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center due to COVID-19, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County needed a location to hold its annual summer day camp in the city for a 19th consecutive year. Eastern Mennonite School came through, and with some modifications, the camp is running for the month of July.
The Citizen has covered the pandemic’s effects on Harrisonburg from many angles — how it has afflicted those who have had the virus, slammed local businesses, impacted city finances — even how it’s changed the way we interact. But we’ve mostly covered adults’ points of view and wanted to know how kids in the community have been affected. So we commissioned a student contributor to find out.
Comforters are aptly named. They comfort their makers, the givers, and those who receive them. That’s what makes them so appealing, so magical, so comforting, pun intended.
