Schools solved internet issues for students during the pandemic. The long-term solutions are trickier.
As schools were forced to close during the beginning stages of the pandemic two years ago, Harrisonburg City Public Schools encountered a problem: 1,224 students with insufficient internet access.

BRCC faculty adjust to students’ changing needs, challenges amid the pandemic
Dave Urso, a dean of academic affairs at Blue Ridge Community College, came to the school 16 years ago because it was an open admissions institution that sought to meet students where they were. But with the pandemic interrupting new students’ last couple years of high school, the college has had to adjust in myriad ways to keep up with those students’ needs.

School board to send more students back to class next month
More elementary and middle school students will be back in city classrooms in a month, after the Harrisonburg School Board voted unanimously in a special meeting Tuesday to approve the next phase of the division’s reopening plan.
Proctoring software raises concerns among some college students
Before taking exams last semester, Sydnei Moody, a senior JMU student, paced around her apartment “paranoid” about the strength of her Wi-Fi connection. She kept her professor’s contact information beside her in case she had technology issues. Moody, who’s majoring in accounting and marketing, panned her camera around her room before holding up her ID, scrap sheets of paper, and calculator. She also held up her phone to the webcam and then moved it outside of her reach.
Health district has received 60,000 vaccine doses so far
About 20% of the Central Shenandoah Valley’s residents have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination dose so far, said Dr. Laura Kornegay, health director for this area’s public health district.
District wants public input on the future of school resource officers
The role of school resource officers in Harrisonburg City Public Schools will soon be up for debate in the public sphere, as a task force the district established to examine its contract with the Harrisonburg Police Department is planning a “listening tour” to gather community input. After providing opportunities for public input, the group will present a recommendation to the school board in May.
Board approves younger students’ return to school as early as March
Preschoolers through 2nd grade students — as well as 6th graders — could be back in classrooms as soon as March 22, as the Harrisonburg School Board voted unanimously in Tuesday’s meeting to approve a revised reopening plan.
