On and off campus, pressure mounts to rename several buildings at JMU
In a public ceremony in the fall of 1917, six buildings on Bluestone Hill — the center of campus for what was then the State Normal and Industrial School for Women — were renamed. And for the last 103 years, four of the six have borne the monikers of men who were slaveowners or confederates.

‘We are going to make a change.’ Efforts toward racial justice take shape across Harrisonburg
A silent crowd marched through downtown Harrisonburg with a single voice on Monday. Hands pointed skyward in unison at a community prayer event earlier that evening. And hundreds more gathered Wednesday evening in an online town hall to hear calls to action. Racial justice advocates across Harrisonburg — all of different races, ethnicities and ages — have mobilized peacefully and en masse in the past week. They have employed a variety of tactics to protest systemic racism and police brutality, to pay respects to George Floyd and other black Americans killed by police and to call for change.

After police response to weekend gathering turns ugly, community members will rally Thursday to seek answers
Community members, led by the local NAACP chapter, will rally at Court Square at 1 p.m. Thursday to call for answers about Harrisonburg Police officers’ handling of the break-up of a party early Sunday, which led to officers using their tasers on a woman multiple times before arresting her.
