Seeking a third term on council, Deanna Reed wants city to be more supportive ‘for all’

Deanna Reed has always been proud of her hometown. Born and raised in Harrisonburg, Reed said her priority has always been to make sure the community is “a city for all.” Reed, who has been mayor since 2017, is running for re-election to the city council as one of four candidates vying for three spots. She was the top vote-getter in the June  Democratic primary.

Students in Harrisonburg City Public Schools will have to finish texting and scrolling social media on their phones before school starts and wait until after the final bell rings to resume, now that the school board approved a new cell phone policy.

The cafeteria is the heart of the new Rocktown High School, with the academic, arts, STEM, and athletic wings extending off it. One of the cafeteria’s walls is a large window overlooking the patio with more seating outside. In the middle of the cafeteria, a wide staircase ascends to the doors of the learning commons—a library with study rooms.

It might only be the third week of 2024, but Harrisonburg City Public Schools faculty and staff are already looking ahead to the fall – and changes are on the horizon.The district is already looking ahead and moving teachers and staff to the new Rocktown High School, which is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year. And changes don’t stop at staffing — the School Start Times Task Force has proposed new start and end times for every school in the district by suggesting early start times for younger students and later starts for middle schoolers.
