Council prepares for city manager candidate interviews, moves toward contract for homeless shelter’s design

The city council is taking a key step later this week toward hiring a city manager with a public meeting scheduled for Thursday during which city council members will interview candidates for the job in a closed session.

Renovated and reopened Salvation Army location provides beds, but city still faces dearth of shelter space

Following a change in leadership after allegations of mismanagement, the Salvation Army reopened its emergency shelter on Jefferson Street in Harrisonburg, which comes as another organization — Open Doors — is still looking for a temporary place to reopen its shelter.

Nick Swayne, city’s school board chair and JMU X-Labs director, to leave Hburg to become college president in Idaho

Nick Swayne, the chair of the Harrisonburg School Board and founding director of JMU X-Labs at James Madison University, will become president of North Idaho College and will leave Harrisonburg in August. The departure will create voids in the technical and entrepreneurial spaces at JMU, as well as on the school board.

Fleming and Robinson win Democratic council nominations, while Jones finishes third by one vote

Harrisonburg Democrats chose Dany Fleming and Monica Robinson as the party’s nominees for a pair of City Council seats in the November election, while the only sitting council member running for re-election, Chris Jones, finished third by a single vote.
