Rocktown HS is about to open — here’s a sneak peek at what awaits students

In these last days before Rocktown High School officially opens to students, the school’s teachers and staff are putting the finishing touches on classrooms and preparing for the first day of school.

Decade-long effort to become a ‘two-high-school town’ comes to fruition

The cafeteria is the heart of the new Rocktown High School, with the academic, arts, STEM, and athletic wings extending off it. One of the cafeteria’s walls is a large window overlooking the patio with more seating outside. In the middle of the cafeteria, a wide staircase ascends to the doors of the learning commons—a library with study rooms.

When Harrisonburg High School junior Jumana Alsaadoon found out her student newspaper was nationally recognized, she said she was “shocked.” But then it began to sink in: This national award from the Journalism Education Association was the result of several years of hard work.

It might only be the third week of 2024, but Harrisonburg City Public Schools faculty and staff are already looking ahead to the fall – and changes are on the horizon.The district is already looking ahead and moving teachers and staff to the new Rocktown High School, which is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year. And changes don’t stop at staffing — the School Start Times Task Force has proposed new start and end times for every school in the district by suggesting early start times for younger students and later starts for middle schoolers.  

New safety features on the horizon for Harrisonburg High

Harrisonburg High School is slated to try a new monitoring system that uses artificial intelligence to recognize weapons in hopes of preventing a school shooting and reducing police response times. 

Rocktown High School has its first principal

City school leaders hired Tamara Mines as Rocktown High School’s first principal, and Superintendent Michael Richards and the school board welcomed her at Tuesday night’s meeting. 

Harrisonburg science teacher with a ‘coaching mentality’ is up for national award

Erich Sneller, assistant director of the governor’s STEM academy and teacher at Harrisonburg High School, is up for a national teaching award. As for what got him here, he attributes it to this: “I think it’s my nature and how I was raised. Whatever you do, give it all you can. And that’s what a meaningful life is.”

After weekend death, HHS students stage walk-out to remember Calour Fields and call for end to gun violence

Following the death of 17-year-old Calour Fields over the weekend, students from Harrisonburg High School staged a walkout Monday afternoon to honor Fields’ memory and to call attention to the ever-growing crisis of gun violence in America.
