At a time when journalism is rapidly changing, Harrisonburg High School journalists who help run workshops for budding elementary school reporters are not only teaching how to conduct interviews and check facts — but also how skills like following one’s curiosity and interacting with people can translate to all parts of life.

Departing Harrisonburg High School principal reflects on successes and why retiring wasn’t her first choice

An educator for 34 years, Cynthia Prieto has been at the helm of Harrisonburg High School for the last five years. During that time the school has grown to 1,860 students from about 1,460, causing classes to spill out into auxiliary trailers and some teachers to pack their supplies into mobile carts in lieu of their own classroom.

Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Anderson Ramos Rodriguez was yet another NBA fan who idolized LeBron James and dreamed of playing basketball himself.

“I’ve wanted to play my whole life,” says Rodriguez, now 18. “That’s what I love.”

From exploring Medieval chain mail to detecting illicit vaping, local high school students showcase their research and hard work

The projects cover a wide swath of topics: a patent-pending tool to analyze DNA, a device aimed at addressing a modern twist on “smoking in the boys’ room,” and a comparison of the strength of historic patterns of chain mail.

Split students up by grades? By area of study? By area of the city? School board soliciting input for how new and existing high schools will work together

The city school board will collect community input to help guide the design for the new high school — as well as how it will be set up and operated in conjunction with Harrisonburg High School — including through a public meeting Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Harrison Middle School auditorium.

Harrisonburg High School’s gym will soon sport the name of Roger Bergey – the basketball coach, teacher, and athletic director who served the high school in various roles from 1972 to 2002.
