Five years into the city’s 10-year environmental stewardship plan, Harrisonburg extended its annual Pollinator Week celebration into Pollinator Month, which will conclude this week with a workshop to build “bee hotels” at Purcell Park on Tuesday.

A vision for revitalizing Purcell Park is starting to take shape, as the Harrisonburg City Council heard a presentation Tuesday about the park’s master plan that has been in the works since last spring. As of yet, there is no timeline set for the updates, which would include an entirely new playground, flooding mitigation, longer walking trails and an outdoor event space.
Residents find outdoor refuge in city parks, but Westover pool and other rec facilities’ reopening remain uncertain
While the Parks and Recreation Department has kept open access to trails and fields on its properties, its programming has shifted online and other oft-used facilities, such as the Westover skatepark and all the parks’ playground equipment, remained locked or roped off. The Parks and Recreation department is also unsure as to how and when certain facilities will open up, including the Westover Pool. Parks and Rec employees plan on discussing that in meetings this week.
