For the first time since the 2019 year-end roundup, the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t driving local news, at least in the stories our readers were clicking on the most. In fact, of the top 10 most-read stories on The Citizen in 2022, the word “COVID” appears only in passing, like a black cloud receding into the distance.

Jones and Saucedo to face each other in Democratic caucus in July

Harrisonburg Democrats will vote in a caucus on July 16 to determine whether council member Chris Jones or local activist Paloma Saucedo will be the party’s nominee for a city council seat. 

Council taps former Mayor Richard Baugh as Hirschmann’s replacement

The four remaining members of the Harrisonburg City Council on Thursday unanimously appointed Richard Baugh, a former mayor and council member, to fill the council seat opened by last week’s sudden resignation of George Hirschmann.

UPDATED: Harrisonburg City Councilman George Hirschmann, the lone independent on the council, announced Thursday that because of health concerns, he has resigned from city council effective immediately.

The Harrisonburg City Council on Tuesday approved a four-cent increase on the real estate tax rate, which will help restart construction of the new high school — all part of the final version of the city’s nearly $295 million Fiscal Year 2022 budget. Also in Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Deanna Reed announced why a proposed expansion of Middle River Regional Jail is a no-go.

Council members see need for investment but still not sold on expansion after MRRJ tour

After a tour of the Middle River Regional Jail on Saturday, Harrisonburg city council members indicated that they still want to explore alternative options to the proposed $40 million expansion plans.

Council candidates discuss ALICE, transportation, and affordable housing

The candidates campaigning for the three city council seats up for election on Nov. 3 participated in a virtual forum Wednesday night – the second such event this month involving all five candidates. Two incumbents, Mayor Deanna Reed (D) and George Hirschmann (I), and three first-time candidates, Democrats Laura Dent and Charles Hendricks, plus Republican Kathleen Kelley, largely agreed on topics ranging from how to help low-income residents in Harrisonburg to transportation priorities.
