City to begin cardboard recycling collections on Fridays 

Harrisonburg residents can schedule online to have cardboard picked up from their homes beginning next week. The city will begin an opt-in program for recycling-bound cardboard collections on Fridays so people won’t have to bring cardboard to a recycling drop-off point.

Concerns about ballooning construction costs for the city’s homeless services center and low barrier shelter prompted the city council to hold off on finalizing a plan Tuesday for spending its $23.8 million in federal American Recovery Plan Act funds.

City still seeking public input for public art at downtown’s northern gateway

Harrisonburg has been gathering input for the last month about ideas regarding a sculpture where Liberty and Main streets connect on the north end of downtown. And the city will continue to collect ideas from members of the public through August, including through an online survey. 

City looks to add 15 new firefighters for new station. And there’s a plan to cover those salaries for 3 years.

The Harrisonburg Fire Department will move ahead with plans to add 15 new firefighters over the next year so they can begin training staff for the new fire station near EMU’s campus that is slated to open in January 2024. But the city might not have to cover their salaries until 2026.
