Perspectives: My image (and others’ perceptions)

I was sent to go door-to-door with a friend of mine, who was from the area. She is white, blonde and an American girl. I came to the U.S. in 2016 from Kurdistan region of Iraq. Every time she rang the bell, we were met by nice people with a great sense of welcoming. The first time I rang the bell, a gentleman opened the door. He asked me with a stern tone: “What do you want?”

Of the many, many things to do in Harrisonburg on a summer evening, few have been around as long as the Harrisonburg Turks, a local baseball team with a tradition stretching back almost 100 years. The Turks open their season at 7:30pm on Friday, May 31st, with a home game at Veterans Memorial Park against the Charlottesville Tom Sox.

On this early summer evening, a wave of kids crashes across the new splash pad at Westover Park. They’d been forced to wait through the usual adults stuff – talking, more talking, photo ops, more talking – but now, with the ceremonial ribbon finally cut, they  are turned loose.
