Meet the low-profile outfit behind one of Harrisonburg’s highest-rising structures
After Bridgeforth Stadium, it’s possibly the most recognizable landmark for those driving through Harrisonburg on Interstate 81. The 120-foot wind turbine is perched on a ridge on the east side of the highway, its spinning, 33-foot blades propelled by the invisible breeze. What can’t be seen from the road is the force behind that specific turbine – a renewable energy advocacy organization that calls Harrisonburg home.

General Assembly debates mandatory prison time for students who make certain school threats
While some say different circumstances call for different outcomes, a bill now moving through the General Assembly would create a mandatory prison sentence for certain kinds of threats made against schools in Virginia. Though the law is a response to the increase in threats made against schools in parts of Virginia, local school administrators say they have not seen an increase in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

As weather forecasts improve, public perceptions still skewed by occasional whiffs.
“Sometimes the forecast is a big bust, like the horrible snow we got in December,” Urbanowicz recalled. “There was a 15-inch difference in the snow totals within forty miles. That’s the humbling part of being a meteorologist. You’re still trying to predict the future.”

Harrisonburg High School teacher Myron Blosser’s educational philosophy is as follows: “Any time you do something you build more emotion than when you just see or read something.”
This Wednesday, that “doing something” had his students piled into the small radiology room at The Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro, peering x-ray images displayed on a computer.
“Yep,” one student called to Blosser, who was crowded out into the hallway. “This one’s got lead in it.”

At 600 yards it’s difficult, at first, to get a perspective of the size of the nest hid in the center of a tree on a farm field edge near Singers Glen. The realization that the sycamore is probably at least 50 feet tall means the nest must be more than four feet across. A passing flock of geese disturbs the occupant of the gigantic tangle of sticks and grass. The bird takes flight, its wings unfolding to reveal an unmistakable white head and tail. The bald eagle flaps lazily, gaining altitude as it glides in an arc that takes it towards Little North Mountain.

By the time the polls opened at 6 a.m. on Election Day, Pat Haden had already been on the job for over an hour. As a Chief Officer of Election, Haden’s day had started in the wee hours of the morning as she prepared to be at the JMU’s Convo Center at 5 a.m. There would be a flurry of activity in that hour before the first voter could arrive. 2018 will mark the seventh general election Haden has worked in Harrisonburg.
