Harrisonburg Democrats pick their 26th District nominee today

After today’s primary, it will be either Cathy Copeland or Brent Finnegan as the Democratic challenger to Republican Del. Tony Wilt in the 26th state House District.

With few major policy differences between them, Cathy Copeland and Brent Finnegan have settled on making their closing arguments in next week’s Democratic primary about who gives Democrats the best shot to defeat Republican Del. Tony Wilt of Broadway in November.

Brent Finnegan and Cathy Copeland, the two Democratic candidates running for the 26th state House seat, might leave little space between each other when it comes to their positions on issues, but the two are taking slightly different approaches to connect with voters before the June 11 primary.

At Democratic forum, candidates largely in agreement on the issues – and critiques of Republican policies

At last night’s forum, Cathy Copeland and Brent Finnegan, running for the Democratic nomination in the 26th House of Delegates District disagreed little on topics like education, the environment, the economy, abortion, and gun control. And they spent lots of time criticizing Del. Tony Wilt, the Republican incumbent one of them will face in the general election.

Propelled by Rockingham Co. Republicans in Saturday’s primary, Chris Runion looks ahead to fall’s 25th House District race

Each of the three candidates for the Republican nomination to represent the 25th House of Delegates enjoyed a home-field advantage in Saturday’s firehouse primary, and the candidate with the biggest home field emerged the overall winner. Chris Runion, a businessman from Bridgewater, won with 1,299 total votes across the district — roughly 42 percent of 3,084 total votes cast.

Democratic 26th District candidates both try small-donor approach — but reveal different campaign spending philosophies as they try to chase Del. Wilt.

By emphasizing small, individual donations and not seeking corporate money from power companies such as Dominion Energy, the two Democrats running for the party’s nomination in the 26th House of Delegates seat this fall are following larger trends within the party.
